Ladyboys and Ferrets

May 18th, 2009 Add comment

Back by popular demand, we have started airing the “Lady Boy” and “Losing Lincoln” TV ads promoting our world-leading Yahoo! Mail features.

“Lady Boy” follows the plight of an Australian man who faces marital issues due to an unexpected spam email. “Losing Lincoln” demonstrates how a full inbox can lead to an empty, lonely life.

The ads will run across Channel Seven and the Yahoo!7 network and are all about being cheeky and fun. They show everyday Australians facing some life challenges as a result of having an inferior web mail product. We got such great feedback about this campaign from people both here in Australia, and internationally, that we thought it was too good to stay sitting in the top drawer. I hope you enjoy the ads and give Yahoo! Mail a go.

My iPhone and Yahoo! Messenger

May 7th, 2009 Add comment

When I first arrived in Australia I was given a prepaid very low tech Nokia, while the phone was nothing to look at it made up 10-fold in functionality, it made calls, sent texts, and even had a torch… quite handy when you don’t know where you are in the dark. I also enjoyed the retro chic that came with it.
Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone
Anyway two weeks ago I decided it was about time I got with the program and despite the ridiculous data charges in this country I went out and bought myself an iPhone. There’s not a lot of bad things I can say about the iPhone, unwrapping the beast felt like a guilty pleasure, the lack of instructions confused me for 10 minutes, my chubby fingers were not nimble enough for the keyboard and it didn’t come with a torch, although apparently there’s an app for that.

There’s plenty of good things to say about the iPhone but today I’m going to concentrate on how well integrated the iPhone is with Yahoo! For starters the phones default apps include stocks and weather from Yahoo! and search was defaulted to Yahoo! I’ve since synced my Yahoo! Address book with the iPhone, push my Yahoo! Mail accounts in perfect unison, downloaded the Inquisitor search application and have fallen in love with the Yahoo! Messenger app.

The Yahoo! Messenger app is pretty much perfect, the design and functionality is very much like the latest download version and has all our favourite emoticons. I actually prefer the way each message is displayed on the iPhone version and its ingenious to be able to take a photo and instantly share that with your messenger friends so cool B-) I’d tweak it to allow interoperability with MSN Messenger and maybe free voice over wifi/3G and it’s a crying shame that the SMS business model in Australia doesn’t allow us to offer free texts to our Aussie users.

This video provides a great demonstration of the application take a look, download the app from iTunes and let us know what you think :)

Have a great weekend

Welcome to Yodel Down Under!

May 6th, 2009 Add comment

Welcome to the official Yahoo!7 blog aptly named Yodel Down Under.

We’ve not called it a corporate blog on purpose as we intend it to be (in the true spirit of blogging) not too ‘corporate’. So the reality is that it will be a bit ‘corporate’, but the plan is for a range of people from across the Yahoo!7 business here in Australia to post blogs – everything from what goes on at Pier 8 & 9 (Sydney head office) to new products launched, techy stuff for developers and interesting things from the world of online advertising.

“Cripes, just launching a blog now – isn’t that a bit 2004?” Indeed. We’ve in fact had a few different blogs going for a while but thought it might be useful to bring them together into one place and talk about more than just our products. Call it the “greatest hits” of current Yahoo!7 product blogs – with some new stuff too.

Got something to say to us? Cool. Just keep it clean and tidy (no swear words, or discrimination etc etc – you know the drill) and we’ll do our best to address your comments.

All I have left to do is introduce a few of our bloggers – there will be more to come, so this is just an initial taste of what to expect (can you tell I work in PR and marketing). Drum roll please……

Amanda Millar (me) – I’m the PR chick and Aussie developers might also trip over me at one of the Yahoo!7 Open Session events which I help organise.

Sebastian Urban – Technical Yahoo! and occasional foosballer. Seb leads the Search engineering team. If he had three wishes, he would use the second one to create a Lego minifig that looks like him.

Morgan Williams – Morgan’s specialist subjects include Mail, Messenger, Flickr, other online communities and Britain in the Dark Ages.

Harry Burt – Harry heads up the marketing crew here. He’s a Brit but we forgive him.

David Morrison – David is the Media Production Manager. He makes sure all our Media websites are ‘wow’ experiences for our users.

Neil Wilkinson (Wilf) – In additional to having a fully entrenched nickname, Wilf is a pointy-haired geek and long -time Yahoo!7 technology lover/developer/manager.

Aidan Beanland – Aidan is our resident surfer (in fact he’s on leave surfing right now) and SEO (mini) god. Aidan knows how to optimise both the ocean and the internet.

Let us know if there is something in particular you’d like to see on the blog – we’re pumped and we hope you are too!
